Fall into action with the Pollination Pathway Stewardship Series!

Get your hands dirty, learn about native plant care, and help us “put the plants to bed” for winter. Join us this September and October for a 4-part volunteer series focused on hands-on stewardship. Each session features activities like planting, weeding, and mulching, and a unique educational session on supporting plants and pollinators year-round.

The series will take place at 4 of our restoration sites in the West Kootenay. These are volunteer days, welcome to any and all plant-curious folks! Please come prepared for variable weather conditions, bring extra layers of clothing, hats, etc, as well as a packed lunch and water. We have access to a limited supply of tools and gloves, so if you have equipment on hand, please bring your own. 

Series Details: 

  1. Adapting the Pathway

Date: Sunday, September 21

Time: 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM

Location: Beaver Creek Provincial Park, Monarch Waystation Learning Garden

Focus: Monarch Waystation Management. Volunteers will learn about the challenges of managing a dynamic ecosystem by focusing on the removal of yarrow, a plant whose uncertain status in the habitat requires careful attention. This is the first step in ensuring the pathway remains healthy and balanced.

  1. Creating Shelter on the Pathway

Date: Sunday, September 28

Location: Syringa Park, Butterfly Habitat Learning Garden

Time: 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM

Focus: Preparing habitat for winter. This session will focus on how to prepare the garden for winter to ensure bees and other pollinators have a safe place to overwinter. Volunteers will learn about leaving plant stems and leaf litter as a crucial form of shelter.

  1. Planting the Pathway

Date: Saturday, October 18

Location: Fort Shepherd Conservancy, Trail

Time: 8:30 AM  – 4:00 PM

Focus: Camas Meadow Management. Volunteers will learn about the importance of camas meadows as a cornerstone of the local ecosystem and the specific techniques required for their management. The focus will be on planting and ensuring the success of these vital native plants.

  1. Preparing the Future Pathway

Date: Saturday, October 25

Location: Nelson Monarch Waystation

Time: 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM

Focus: Starting a new Monarch Waystation site. The final event will bring together all the lessons learned. Volunteers will learn the principles of habitat restoration, from site assessment to the preparation needed to successfully reintroduce native species.
