Have you ever walked through a garden and wondered what secrets plants are sharing? From vibrant colours that attract bees to underground networks that send warnings, the world of plant communication is a fascinating and evolving field of science. We invite you to dive deep into this hidden world with us!
Daniel Mosquin
“Scientific evidence for plant communication has steadily accumulated over recent years. The well-known colour and fragrance modes of communication have long been known as ways to communicate with animals in particular, but how do plants communicate within themselves? How do they communicate with other plants? Even with the old standbys, is there more to colour than only attracting pollinators and fruit-eaters?”
Join the Kootenay Native Plant Society for our much-anticipated annual Speaker Series and AGM on Thursday, September 18, 2025, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. You can join us in person at the United Church in Nelson (lower hall) or tune in from home virtually via Google Meet.
Hear from the Experts
This year, we are thrilled to focus on Plant Communication with two fantastic presentations:
- “Plant Communications” with special guest Daniel Mosquin of the UBC Botanical Garden. An acclaimed botanist and photographer, Daniel will share storytelling vignettes about the incredible ways plants communicate within themselves and with each other.
- “Pollinator-Plant Messaging” with KNPS Senior Scientist Dr. Brenda Beckwith. In this crucial update on the Pollination Pathway Project, Brenda will reveal what the shifting relationships between native plants and pollinators are telling us about the impacts of climate change and the success of local habitat restoration.
Our Annual General Meeting
Following the presentations, we will hold a brief Annual General Meeting (AGM). We encourage all our members to stick around for this short 20-minute session to help us vote on our board and approve key documents for the year ahead. The speaker series is open to everyone, but only members can vote.
This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with fellow plant lovers, learn something new, and support the work of the KNPS. We can’t wait to see you there!
