Join us, on Sunday, April 24, 1pm-4pm, for the Fourth Annual Camas Discovery Day in Millennium Park, Castlegar.

This year we will be showing off the Park’s new Camas Conservation Area, a one-of-a-kind protected area created specifically for the conservation of the beautiful camas lily! To celebrate this great achievement and to share in the many values and virtues of camas, we have a theme this year: Paint In and Plant In the Park.”

You can Paint In by bringing your creative side, as we will have easels, paints, canvases, and brushes available for you to create a painting (or drawing) of the lilies in all their glory.

To inspire you, local artists Mary Kate Woodward, Heather MacAskill, and Lada Love will be interpreting the camas creatively, plein air, during the event.

Come and Plant In and learn how to grow your own camas from seed in a mini-workshop with native plant expert Valerie Huff. These workshops will be held at 1:30 pm and 2:30 pm. Seeds and pots provided.

Join Dr. Brenda Beckwith, Canada’s preeminent camas researcher, for interpretive walks at 2:00 pm and 3:00 pm. Learn about how the ecological and cultural relationships between this highly valued plant and local First Nations sustained a heritage landscape over time.

Environmental educator Megan Read will lead the Kid’s Activity Zone with additional fun activities for kids of all ages.

Plant In and Paint In activities are provided by donation. Proceeds will support ongoing maintenance and management of the Camas Conservation Area, ensuring that we keep camas flourishing in Millennium Park for many years to come.

This is an event for the whole family! On April 24, come celebrate Camas Discovery Day with us, and discover for yourself the cultural values and ecological virtues, and aesthetic wonders, of our beautiful camas lilies!
